Choosing your long dress for your body shape

Petite frames (under 5'5")

A long dress can be your best ally if you choose the right details. Favour high slits (mid-thigh or higher), which create a broken vertical line and visually lengthen the legs. Deep V-necklines stretch the bust downward. Avoid horizontal panelling (contrasting belts, waist cut-outs), which cuts the silhouette.

Recommended cut: A straight sheath with a side slit, an empire waist (high, under the bust) that lengthens the legs, or a light mermaid style without excessive volume at the bottom.

High heels are essential: a minimum of 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) so the fabric doesn't "swallow" your frame. Our tip? A plain black long dress with a high slit and nude heels: the visual continuity between legs and shoes adds a perceived 10 cm (4 inches) of height.

Tall frames (5'7" and up)

You were made to wear a long dress! Your height lets you carry volume, light trains, and dramatic mermaid gowns with ease. Dare a fully open back that shows off the length of your spine, or complex cut-outs (side cut-outs, waist panels) that create graphic lines.

Recommended cut: Mermaid to show off your curves, a sheath that follows your body line, or a flowing empire cut for a goddess effect. You can get away with a long dress with no slit at all (your height compensates), but a discreet slit makes walking easier and adds movement.

Watch out for one pitfall: even if you're tall, avoid dresses that drag on the floor (you risk stepping on them). The ideal length? Just grazes the top of your foot in heels, or lightly touches the floor barefoot.

Curvier frames

A long dress is fabulously flattering on generous curves. It lengthens the silhouette vertically while camouflaging the areas you'd rather minimise (hips, thighs, calves). The secret? Draw the eye upward with a beautiful neckline and create a smooth, unbroken line.

Recommended cut: An empire waist (which hides the tummy), a wrap style that creates a flattering V-neckline, or a sheath in flowing fabrics (jersey, satin) that glides over curves without clinging aggressively. Favour fabrics with good drape (avoid stiff ones like taffeta). A moderate side slit (knee to mid-thigh) slims without revealing too much. Dark (black, burgundy, midnight blue) or solid colours elongate; avoid horizontal patterns, which widen.

The slit dress: how far is too far?

A slit transforms an elegant long dress into a statement one. But how high should you go, depending on the occasion and your comfort level?

  • Discreet slit (knee): Practical for walking, suitable for any context, including professional or religious settings. Elegant and understated, ideal for any occasion.
  • Medium slit (mid-thigh): The perfect sweet spot. Daring without being excessive, flattering on every body shape. A versatile choice that suits most dressed-up events. It's the "safe" slit that everyone loves.
  • High slit (upper thigh): Spectacular and daring. For red carpets, exceptional events, or when you want to make an impression. Requires confidence and should be worn fully owned.

Lingerie tip: Choose invisible or seamless underwear to avoid any visible show-through under the fabric.
  • Double slit (both sides): Resolutely daring, reserved for the boldest among you. A modern Greek-goddess effect. Perfect for photos and events where you want to be unforgettable.

Safety tip: If your slit is very high, a few dots of double-sided fashion tape between skin and fabric on the inner thigh will prevent any mishaps from sudden movements or gusts of wind.

💎 How to walk in a long slit dress

A long dress with a high slit calls for a specific way of walking. Unlike a normal walk (legs parallel), adopt a slightly crossed stride: the leg that steps forward passes just in front of the other. This natural model's movement reveals the slit with every step and creates an elegant sway.

Your hips move naturally, and the slit opens and closes to the rhythm of your stride: a hypnotic effect, guaranteed. Practise for a few minutes at home before the event, it quickly becomes instinctive.
