What dress length should I choose for a formal event?
The classic rule: the more formal the event, the longer the dress. You're free to interpret this, but it's a helpful guide to avoid being out of place.
For galas, opera, or evening weddings, favour floor-length (ankle or full-length).
For smart cocktails or elegant dinners, midi length (mid-calf) is perfect: dressy enough without being overly formal.
For romantic dinners or private evenings, you have complete freedom. Short will likely be most appreciated!
Our tip for petite frames (under 5'5"): if you're concerned a long cut might shorten you, choose a long dress with a high slit. It creates a vertical line that lengthens, especially with heels. Mermaid dresses (fitted to the knees then flared) also elongate all silhouettes.
